Biological Activity

7-Ketocholesterol is a bioactive oxysterol and cholesterol oxidation product that acts as a potent inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase and cytochrome P450 7A1 (CYP7A1). Disruption of sterol homeostasis by this compound enhances intracellular reactive oxygen species accumulation and activates endoplasmic reticulum stress signaling pathways. Consequently, these cellular alterations lead to downstream induction of apoptosis in macrophages and vascular cells.[1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
