Biological Activity
5-Bromocytosine is a halogenated pyrimidine nucleobase derivative used in nucleic acid cross-linking synthesis under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. As a product of myeloperoxidase-mediated oxidative damage, it forms during halogenation of nucleobases in inflammation, leading to structural alterations in nucleic acids and downstream DNA damage response activation. These cross-linking and incorporation properties render it a valuable chemical probe for studying nucleobase modifications and nucleic acid interactions. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
