5-CFDA (5--Carboxyfluorescein diacetate) is a cell-permeable fluorescent probe and substrate for intracellular esterases. Upon passive diffusion into cells, non-specific esterases cleave the acetate groups to yield carboxyfluorescein, which accumulates intracellularly to enable fluorimetric evaluation of cell viability and cell growth. Additionally, fluorescent labeling with CFDA permits cell tracking without affecting cellular adhesion molecule expression or leukocyte function. [1][2]
