Biological Activity

4-Nitrophenyl-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-β-D-glucopyranoside is a chromogenic substrate for N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG). Upon enzymatic hydrolysis by NAG, it releases 4-nitrophenol, which produces a yellow solution measurable by spectrophotometry. This chromogenic reaction enables the rapid colorimetric quantification of NAG enzymatic activity in biological samples, serving as a functional indicator for assessing renal tubular damage, nephrotoxicity, and lysosomal hydrolase function.[1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
