Biological Activity

4-Chloro-DL-phenylalanine (Fenclonine, PCPA) is a selective and irreversible inhibitor of tryptophan hydroxylase, the rate-limiting enzyme in serotonin biosynthesis. By inhibiting tryptophan hydroxylase, it suppresses central and peripheral serotonin production, leading to depletion of endogenous serotonin levels. This reduction in serotonin signaling impacts downstream serotonergic neurotransmission and associated physiological functions, making it a key tool in neuropharmacological research on mood, sleep, and behavioral regulation. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
