Biological Activity

3,3-Dimethyl-1-butanol (Neohexanol) is an orally active inhibitor of gut microbial trimethylamine (TMA) lyase, preventing the enzymatic generation of TMA and its subsequent conversion to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). By suppressing TMA and TMAO levels, this compound negatively regulates downstream p65 NF-κB and TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathways. Consequently, it attenuates vascular inflammation, inhibits macrophage foam cell formation, and protects against diet-induced atherosclerosis. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
