Biological Activity

25-Hydroxycholesterol is an endogenous side-chain oxysterol and selective suppressor of IgA production in B cells (EC50 ≈ 65 nM). Produced via cholesterol 25-hydroxylase during immune activation, it modulates lipid metabolism and inflammatory pathways to suppress B cell IgA class-switch recombination and influence lipid homeostasis. It also plays a key role in immune defense and the pathogenesis of vascular disorders such as atherosclerosis. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
