Biological Activity

2-Methoxybenzoic acid (o-anisic acid) is a benzoic acid derivative and flavoring agent that functions as a small-molecule inhibitor of tyrosinase. By targeting the tyrosinase enzyme, 2-methoxybenzoic acid suppresses monophenolase and diphenolase catalytic activities, thereby blocking downstream melanin biosynthesis. In cellular and biochemical contexts, this inhibition modulates melanogenesis and cellular response pathways associated with oxidative stress and pigment formation. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
