Biological Activity

17α-Hydroxypregnenolone is a natural steroidogenesis intermediate and precursor to dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), produced from pregnenolone via cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1) hydroxylase activity. Within the adrenal cortex and gonads, it undergoes 17,20-lyase cleavage to yield DHEA or conversion by 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase to 17α-hydroxyprogesterone. Elevated plasma levels of this steroid metabolite serve as a diagnostic hallmark for type II 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficiency. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
