Biological Activity
1-Thioglycerol is a small-molecule thiol compound and competitive inhibitor of glycerol kinase activity. By targeting glycerol kinase, it suppresses intracellular glycerol utilization and modulates lipid metabolic pathways in host cells. Additionally, treatment with 1-thioglycerol stimulates porphyrin biosynthesis and secretion in aerobically growing Escherichia coli through the upregulation of glutamyl-tRNA reductase activity dependent on de novo protein synthesis.[1][2]
