Biological Activity

1-Phenyl-2-thiourea is a tyrosinase inhibitor that suppresses melanogenesis and blocks pigment formation during organismal development. By inhibiting tyrosinase-mediated melanin synthesis pathways, 1-phenyl-2-thiourea enhances optical transparency in developing zebrafish embryos for imaging applications. Additionally, 1-phenyl-2-thiourea exposure activates macroautophagy signaling cascades and disrupts thyroid hormone synthesis, leading to affected developmental phenotypes and altered thyroid function in embryonic models.[1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
