Biological Activity

Protamine sulfate is a highly positively charged polycationic protein derived from salmon sperm that functions as a heparin antagonist. It binds electrostatically to negatively charged unfractionated heparin, forming an inactive salt complex lacking anticoagulant activity. This neutralizing interaction prevents heparin-mediated activation of antithrombin, thereby reversing systemic anticoagulation and restoring normal blood coagulation mechanisms. [1]
