Biological Activity

Description 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (P-Methylolphenol, 4-Methylolphenol), an important phenolic constituent of Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB), has been shown to have many beneficial effects in different animal models of neurological disorders, such as, headaches, convulsive behavior, dizziness, and vertigo.
In vitro 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol has been shown to suppress inflammation, which is most probably due to its capability of reducing cyclooxygenase activity. HBA acts as a typical pleiotropic agent, which targets multiple mechanisms of angiogenesis, including production of angiogenic growth factors and MMPs, endothelial cell proliferation and migration as well as vascular sprouting and network formation[1].
In vivo 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol inhibits the vascularization of newly developing tumors and that this is associated with a reduced growth rate of the malignant tissue. It ameliorates cerebral ischaemic injury due to the inhibition of apoptotic pathways and the up-regulation of protein disulphide isomerase without inducing any toxic effects at doses up to 200 mg/kg. It exerts an anxiolytic-like action via the activation of the 5-hydroxytryptaminergic nervous system[1].

Protocol (from reference)

Cell Assay:[1]
  • Cell lines

    CT26.WT cell line

  • Concentrations

    1-100 mM

  • Incubation Time

    24 h

  • Method

Cells are cultured in presence of 1-100 mM HBA. Cells exposed to vehicle (DMSO) serve as control. After 24h, 10μL of WST-1 reagent per 100μL medium are added into each well. After 30min at 37°C, absorption is measured at 450 nm with 620 nm as reference using a microplate reader and corrected to blank values (wells without cells).

Animal Study:[1]
  • Animal Models

    BALB/c mice

  • Dosages

    200 mg/kg

  • Administration
