Biological Activity

Description Skatole (3-methylindole, Scatole) is a mildly toxic white crystalline organic compound that occurs naturally in feces. It has a fairly broad bacteriostatic effect.
In vivo 3MI causes pulmonary edema in goats, sheep, rats, and some strains of mice. Response to 3-methylindole (3MI) varies among species. Mice recover from 3MI-induced bronchiolar epithelial injury but sustain persistent olfactory mucosal injury with scarring and epithelial metaplasia. In contrast, 3MI induces obliterative bronchiolitis in horses and ponies. It also causes severe olfactory mucosal damage and fibrosis in rodents (in addition to small airways disease)[2].

Protocol (from reference)

Cell Assay:

[1]

  • Cell lines

    Pig hepatocytes

  • Concentrations

    0.5 mM

  • Incubation Time

    24 h

  • Method

Cells were pre-incubated for 24 h prior to addition of acetone or skatole. A total of 17 mM acetone or 0.5 mM skatole (final concentration) were added and cells were incubated for further 24 h. Control cells were treated similarly except that no acetone or skatole was added.

Animal Study:

[2]

  • Animal Models

Fifteen adult grade ponies (aged 2 to approximately 20 years; mean weight, 177.1 kg)

  • Dosages

    100 mg/kg

  • Administration

    nasogastric intubation
