Biological Activity

Description L-SelenoMethionine (SeMet), a naturally occurring amino acid, is a major food-form of selenium. It has been used as a supplement, and exhibits some important functions like cancer prevention and antioxidative defense.
In vitro L-SelenoMethionine (SeMet) has also been shown to contribute to the mitigation of radiation-induced oxidative stress. L-SelenoMethionine has the ability to selectively induce apoptosis and growth arrest in cancerous, but not normal, human prostate cells. Mechanistically, SeMet treatment is shown to promote growth inhibition in human colon cancer cells through the phosphorylation of histone H3 via the activation of MAPK extracellular regulated kinase (ERK) and subsequent phosphorylation of the ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK)[1].
In vivo L-SelenoMethionine (SeMet) increases survival time of NK/Ly lymphoma bearing animals treated with doxorubicin. L-SelenoMethionine (SeMet) can effectively protect the hematopoietic system and liver of tumor-bearing animals with NK/Ly lymphoma from the side effects of anticancer drug doxorubicin, which is revealed by normalization of blood indexes, animal weight, and ALT/AST activity[2].

Protocol (from reference)

Cell Assay:[1]
  • Cell lines

    Human thyroid epithelial cells (HTori-3)

  • Concentrations

    5 μM

  • Incubation Time

    24 h

  • Method

Human thyroid epithelial cells (HTori-3) are maintained in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM)/F12 supplemented with 1% glutamine and 10% FBS (growth medium). Twenty-four hours prior to irradiation with iron ions, fresh medium with or without 5 μM SeM is added. At the time of radiation exposure, the cells are approximately 80% confluent.

Animal Study:[2]
  • Animal Models

    NL/Ly lymphoma-bearing mice

  • Dosages

    60 μg/kg, cumulative dose 600 μg/kg

  • Administration

    p.o.
