Biological Activity

Description Ethyl ferulate (Ferulic acid ethyl ester) is the alkyl ester derivative of ferulic acid which is a naturally occurring plant product with anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antiproliferative activities.
In vitro Ethyl ferulate is an inducer of HO-1 expression, at both mRNA and protein levels, and HO activity in cultured astrocytes and hippocampal neurons[1].

Protocol (from reference)

Cell Assay:[1]
  • Cell lines

Rat type 1 astrocytes (DI TNC1) and rat hippocampal neurons (H 19-7)

  • Concentrations

    0-25 μM

  • Incubation Time

    6 or 24 h

  • Method

Cells are grown in 75-cm2 flasks and maintained at 37℃ in a humidified atmosphere of air and 5% CO2. Confluent cells are exposed to various concentrations of EFE and RSV. After each treatment (6 or 24 h), cells are harvested for the determination of HO activity, HO-1 and HO-2 mRNA levels, and protein expression. Neurons growing in 24 wells are also exposed to different concentrations of EFE, and cell viability is determined at 24 h. Other neurons are pretreated for 12 h with 5 µM EFE or 5 µM EFE plus 10 µM ZnPP IX and then exposed for 2 h to 50 mU/mL GOX, before cell viability is determined.
