Biological Activity

Description Spermidine (4-Azaoctamethylenediamine), a natural polyamine produced from putrescine and decarboxylated S-adenosylmethionine (dcSAM) by spermidine synthase, is a novel autophagy inducer and negatively modulates N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA).
Targets
Autophagy [1] NMDAR [1]
In vitro Spermidine induces autophagy in cultured yeast and mammalian cells, as well as in nematodes and flies[1].
In vivo Spermidine at 200 μg/mouse, intracerebellar injection (icb), does not alter basal cGMP levels. Spermidine attenuates responses mediated through the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), NMDA-associated glycine receptor and quisqualate receptors. Spermidine is widely distributed in neural and non-neural tissues and has been shown to play a key role in cell differentiation and growth[2].
