Biological Description

Specificity Lamin A + Lamin B1 + Lamin C Rabbit mAb recognizes endogenous levels of total Lamin A + Lamin B1 + Lamin C protein.
Background Lamin A, Lamin C, and Lamin B1 are key components of the nuclear lamina, a meshwork of type V intermediate filament proteins that provide structural support to the nuclear envelope. Lamin A and Lamin C are A-type lamins encoded by the LMNA gene through alternative splicing, while Lamin B1 is a B-type lamin encoded by the LMNB1 gene. Structurally, all lamins share a conserved α-helical central rod domain flanked by a short N-terminal “head” and a longer C-terminal “tail” domain, enabling them to polymerize and form the nuclear lamina beneath the inner nuclear membrane. Lamin A and C are primarily expressed in differentiated cells and appear later during development, playing roles in nuclear shape, chromatin organization, and mechanotransduction. In contrast, Lamin B1 is expressed in all somatic cells throughout development and is essential for cell survival and nuclear integrity. Together, these lamins regulate nuclear architecture, genome organization, and cell-type-specific functions, with mutations—especially in LMNA—linked to diverse genetic disorders called laminopathies.
