Biological Description

Specificity Galectin 8/Gal-8 Rabbit mAb detects endogenous levels of total Galectin 8/Gal-8 protein.
Background Galectin 8/Gal-8 is a tandem-repeat-type β-galactoside-binding lectin widely expressed in human tissues and involved in diverse physiological and pathological processes. It contains two distinct carbohydrate recognition domains (N-CRD and C-CRD) connected by a linker peptide of variable length (33 aa in Gal-8S, 75 aa in Gal-8L), with the N-CRD uniquely showing high affinity for α2–3-sialylated or 3′-sulfated β-galactosides, and the C-CRD preferentially binding branched N-glycans. Alternative mRNA splicing generates multiple isoforms, that differs in CRD specificity and potential interdomain interactions. Functionally, Gal-8 acts as a matricellular protein regulating cell adhesion, migration, and immune responses, displaying both immunosuppressive and immunostimulatory effects. It plays roles in tumor biology, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, osteoclastogenesis, and tissue morphogenesis, with expression patterns in various cancers suggesting potential diagnostic and prognostic applications.
