Biological Activity

Description Benzydamine HCl (AF864) is a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and local anesthetic activity.
In vitro Benzydamine is structurally unrelated to the corticosteroids. The action of benzydamine may be mediated by the prostaglandin system. The drug may affect formation of thromboxanes and alter biosynthesis of prostaglandin, in doses that can be reached by topical application. Benzydamine displays a stabilizing effect on cell membranes, inhibits degranulation of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and inhibits platelet aggregation. Benzydamine may affect aspects of tissue biochemistry relevant to local mechanisms of inflammation and pain. [1]
In vivo Benzydamine significantly lower the incidence of postoperative sore throat (POST). At 6 hours after extubation, the incidence of POST is 17.0%. Spraying benzydamine hydrochloride on the ETT cuff is a simple and effective method to reduce the incidence and severity of POST. [2]
