Biological Description

Specificity Anti-KGF/FGF-7 Rabbit Antibody [H7F6] detects endogenous levels of total KGF/FGF-7 protein.
Background Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), also known as fibroblast growth factor-7 (FGF-7), is a paracrine mitogen secreted by mesenchymal cells in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines and steroid hormones. As a heparin-binding growth factor, KGF/FGF-7 signals specifically through the epithelial splice variant of fibroblast growth factor receptor 2, FGFR2-IIIb. This receptor is predominantly expressed on epithelial cells, making them the exclusive targets of KGF/FGF-7 activity. Evidence from functional assays in cell and organ cultures, as well as in vivo studies, demonstrates that KGF/FGF-7 stimulates proliferation only in epithelial cells from diverse tissues. Its expression is upregulated following epithelial injury, where it plays a pivotal role in tissue repair. In the pancreas, KGF/FGF-7 functions as a strong mitogen for ductal epithelial cells. However, its proliferative effect has also been linked to tumorigenesis. Both KGF/FGF-7 and its receptor FGFR2-IIIb are frequently overexpressed in pancreatic cancer cells, as well as in adjacent acinar and ductal cells. Acting as a stromal-derived mediator, KGF/FGF-7 promotes pancreatic cancer cell proliferation through paracrine signaling. Tumor-associated fibroblasts, known to contribute to cancer progression via paracrine pathways, may secrete KGF/FGF-7, thereby enhancing the growth of neighboring tumor cells. Moreover, KGF/FGF-7 is among the AP-1–regulated genes induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines, further linking it to inflammation-driven tumor biology.
